Slitting Academy
The professional operation and maintenance of slitting equipment are essential success factors for maximizing efficiency in any production application while also enhancing operator safety. That's why we've created the DIENES Cutting Academy.
In this academy, we offer you our over 100 years of experience in slitting materials, so that operators and personnel involved in cutting applications can acquire the necessary foundation and knowledge to maximize efficiency and increase safety.
Basic training (virtual):
Our basic seminar provides a general understanding of the different methods of longitudinal cutting: scissor cutting, pressure cutting, and Gillette razor cutting, as well as the impact of proper blade sharpening. Some questions that will be answered include:
- What are the differences between the various slitting methods and how do they differ in terms of application areas?
- When should scissor-type cutting be used instead of pressure or crush cutting and when is it better to choose Gillette-type razor cutting?
- What setup parameters need to be considered to achieve the perfect cut?
- Why is sharpening so important and what do I need to pay attention to?
- How can I increase the life of my blade?
Advanced training (classroom)
We offer our advanced training seminar to address any problems or questions that may arise from your particular application. This training covers the basics of one of the 3 main slitting methods: scissor cutting, pressure cutting and Gillette razor cutting, as well as best practices and recommendations for using the correct parameters to prolong the life of the cutting equipment and minimize downtime. Solutions are also presented to identify and correct the most typical problems for each application, ranging from poor cutting edge quality, such as material build-up on the cutting edge or wavy cutting edges, to burr formation, reduced service life and cutting dust accumulation.
This seminar addresses your individual problems in depth and describes how to reduce costs and set-up times, as well as increase blade life within your specific application. As well as the resolution of specific machine issues.
FREQUENT QUESTIONS
Doubts about the Slitting Academy?
The slitting seminar lasts between 2 and 2.5 hours, depending on the questions. The shearing seminar lasts between 1 and 1.5 hours, again depending on the questions. It includes discussion of knife and adhesive cutting, if applicable.
Our goal is for all cutting operators to understand the basics of cutting, the consequences of their actions, and to be able to recognize and prevent potential problems when they see them.
This is a cutting theory course, but we intend to provide “hands-on” information to support your cutting operation. It would be helpful if we can schedule a tour of the production area, prior to the seminars, to review the equipment currently in use for reference during the seminar. Operator input from their experiences usually benefits all attendees.
The seminars are classroom style PowerPoint presentations with class books and individual cutting guides included.
We have no limit on how many or who attends. We would like to know approximately how many attendees there will be so that we can provide enough class books. Generally, the classroom area dictates how many can attend.
We request a classroom type setting with a projector provided by the client, if possible, and a paper easel for drawing as needed. Cold beverages for attendees are optional. Two breaks are scheduled during classes.

During the last nine years of conducting seminars, we intentionally limited direct product sales. We include a brief overview of the entire DIENES Group and use some photographs of DIENES equipment in the seminar. Upon request, we will provide technical information on DIENES products, but not on their prices. Requests for quotations are welcome after the seminar, but are not mandatory.
